Ancient Chinese Lanterns

IN MODERN DESIGN

Chinese lamps are timeless icons of craftsmanship. They now act as cross-cultural catalysts, reimagined by contemporary artists for modern aesthetics.

These three artists uniquely honor traditional Chinese craftsmanship while pushing its boundaries-merging heritage with bold innovation, and offering fresh perspectives to a centuries-old craft.

Michael Young combines Eastern cultural elements with Western industrial design using techniques like die-casting and CNC machining.

Through this fusion of modern light effects and artisanry, he presents a fresh, layered visual experience that sets a new perspective towards traditional chinese design.

Sjang Niederwieser's Volare S3 series reimagines ancient motifs through the precise layering of 3D-printed forms with hand-woven copper.

This approach invites viewers to contemplate each detailed structure, as if it were the trace left by a skillful lamp maker.

Conversely, the Matsuri lighting series by Joseph Pagano reflects Western design principles applied to traditional Chinese materials.

Crafted from brass, hand-blown glass, and agate, each piece represents a thoughtful evolution in design, redefining spatial perception by emphasizing elegance and structural refinement over classical motifs of symmetry and unity.

This cultural intent goes beyond preserving tradition-it breathes new life into it within a modern context. By reinterpreting materials and craftsmanship, it bridges Eastern and Western aesthetics, creating a fresh way to experience contemporary design.
